The standard form of spoken Japanese (Hyojungo) originates in Tokyo. There are various levels of politeness in Japanese speech, depending on the situation. For instance, “thank you” could be “arigato” (informal), “domo arigato” (more formal) and “domo arigato gozaimasu” (formal). Male and female speech differs significantly the more colloquial and conversational the material is.
