Language information
Mandarin is the official language of the People’s Republic of China and is spoken in various forms in Mainland China. It is based on the language spoken in around the Beijing area in the north of the country and in higher-register forms is used for governmental purposes. Standard Mandarin is classified as the only official variety of Chinese by the Communist Party in the country, who describe the other Chinese languages spoken around the vast country as “dialects”, discouraging their use. Mandarin Chinese used four standard spoken tones and one neutral tone (or atonality, depending on which linguistic authority you ask).
Where spoken:
While Mandarin actually consists of closely related varieties of Chinese spoken natively across most of northern and southwestern China, a standard form based on the variant of the Beijing area has been established as its standard and is official in mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore.
