Language information
Vietnamese is a tonal language, where the pitch of pronunciation and how it changes is as critical to the meaning as the actual syllables pronounced. Traditionally, Vietnamese is said to have three dialect regions: North, Central, and South. The North dialect is considered the standard, prestige dialect, and is spoken in the capital city Hanoi. It is seldom heard in Ho Chi Minh City in the far south of the country, where the South dialect is largely spoken instead.
