Specialist media translations for print materials, subtitling and voice-over projects
Adelphi provides a comprehensive media translation and localization service including subtitling, voice-overs, print materials into any language. Our in-house specialist media translation project managers have years of experience providing translations specifically for media projects. This means that if your translation is for voice-overs, subtitling or print we tailor the translations for that process.
As we have many years experience providing translations for media projects we understand the process to get the most out of your project, unlike other translation agencies who will have little understanding of translating for voice-overs and subtitling projects and often provide translations that are too long, not timed properly or that use fonts unsuitable for the software to be used.
Our media translation services include:
- Translations for print materials
- Translations for subtitling including SRT files
- Translations for voice-overs
- Translations for e-learning
Our media translation studio can translate into over 120 different languages. We also specialize in translating rare and difficult languages, which means we can provide one point of contact for any language inquiry.
Quality and timing are paramount to the translation service that Adelphi provides. To this end, we have put in place a system to assure these factors are met. Using the latest Translation Memory software allows our clients to reap the benefits of quicker, cheaper and more consistent translations.
Print material translations and typesetting
By using Adelphi for your media translation and typesetting we will ensure that the correct font is used to avoid any problems at the printing stage. Our foreign language typesetting team has over thirty years of experience in translating and typesetting printed materials into over 120 languages. All our foreign language typesetting is handled in-house and carried out by our own experienced typesetters. We typeset all kinds of documents including corporate brochures, packaging, business cards, posters, and manuals, producing print-ready PDFs from most industry standard applications. We also use translation memory so if your materials are to be updated on a regular basis we can provide 100% matches and ‘fuzzy matches’ to existing translations to keep the costs down.
There is also a process for translating directly into the InDesign using IDML files. These IDML files can be imported into translation software so when the translator translates the text it retains all its formatting and position. The IDML file can then be opened in InDesign and only needs formatting and checking to produce the final translated document. This saves time and money but is not suitable for every document.
SRT and subtitle translations and subtitle production
Experienced subtitle translators will be equipped with translation solutions to ensure that only the essential meaning of the audio track is conveyed in the subtitles. There are space and time restrictions, meaning that the translator cannot just translate the transcript directly as with document translations. This is because we process written information slower than spoken information. Translators must stick to character limits per line and segment the text in grammatically coherent positions to ensure a comfortable reading experience of the viewers. When timing the translations, they must also keep shot changes and minimum durations in mind so there is no flickering or re-reading. The subtitles shouldn’t interfere or distract the viewer from the audiovisual material, so Adelphi uses detailed subtitling style guides that differ for each target country based on local subtitling standards and norms.
In SRT subtitling translation, our audiovisual translator (SRT file translator) would create translated subtitles in the target language directly from the source video. Our subtitle translator would then create SRT files that are used to produce burnt-on subtitles.
An alternative method is to first create an English transcript template in SRT format, the subtitle text of which is then translated by our subtitle translators.
Voice-over translations, artist selection, and recording
When translating for voiceover, particular attention must be paid to the style and tone of the translation. The text will be read aloud, so the register and rhythm of each sentence will be important. If the voiceover will be timed, translators must also keep the text concise. Each segment could be around 2-3 sentences long to fit a particular shot or section of the video. If the target language is likely to expand, meaning the translation will be much longer than the source, the voice artist may struggle to record at a natural pace. The translator must respect the character limits per section or aim to meet the length of the source text.
