Open & Closed Caption Subtitling Formats

Adelphi Studio have produced foreign language and English subtitles for promotional videos, e-learning videos and instructional videos.

As well as providing subtitling translation services for video, Adelphi Translations have been involved in many projects which required ‘same language captions’, which are basically subtitles intended as an aid to deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers.

There are two basic methods of producing foreign language subtitles.

Open Captions

The subtitles can be ‘burned’ onto the video, which means they cannot be turned on or off and are always visible. These are also referred to as ‘open’ captions. They become part of the video file itself. Although using this method means that multiple languages cannot be selected using the same file it is possible to produce multiple versions of the video with different subtitles which can be selected by the user, for example by clicking on different links on a web page.

Closed Captions

For more sophisticated formats such as DVD closed captions are used, this format allows multiple channels of subtitles (and audio) to be created as separate streams on the disc. These can be switched on and off through the selection menu created in the authoring process. At Adelphi Translations we can re-author your DVD to include subtitles and foreign language audio tracks if you can provide us with the original video or the original DVD.

It is also possible to produce switchable foreign language subtitles programmatically. In Adobe Flash, for example, subtitles can be created in an XML file which can then be linked to the Flash movie. An XML file can be created for each language and these can be selected using links in the Flash movie itself. YouTube also provides the facility to upload timed subtitle files which can be switched in the player.

SRT Files

SRT is perhaps the most basic of all subtitle formats.

It consists of four parts, all in text..

1. A number indicating which subtitle it is in the sequence.
2. The time that the subtitle should appear on the screen, and then disappear.
3. The subtitle itself.
4. A blank line indicating the start of a new subtitle.

Norwegian Subtitle Translation Services

Adelphi is a specialist media localization agency and has a full-time translation department sourcing translations in over 120 languages. As well as Subtitling we also produce voice-overs in over 70 languages and typesetting of printed materials in over 120 languages.

Because we control all of the aspects of the subtitle localization from the transcription to translation to the finished subtitled Norwegian video, we can offer quality control throughout the process as well as a high degree of confidentiality.

All our Norwegian subtitles are produced in-house and never outsource any of the work. Our media department works on a wide range of specifications and can take your original video and produce a working copy with Norwegian subtitles ready to publish on the Internet, film, TV, or on DVD.

These subtitles were ‘burnt on’ to the video, which is also called open captions, and because of the nature of the video, in this case, we used a transparent band behind the text for best readability. There are other styles of subtitles we can produce. We can advise you on the best option for your video and even produce samples for you to choose from. We also offer samples of fonts to choose from if required.

Adelphi’s clients include Barclays Bank, the International Olympic Committee, Cisco, Raison, Amnesty International, UNICEF, Vidal Sassoon, Jaguar and many other companies and their agencies.

Norwegian On-Screen Text localization

The on-screen text can also be localized into Norwegian and our technical engineers can convert any on-screen text in the required style. Depending on the complexity and how the original text was produced we may require the data package it was made in.

For more on on-screen text, localization go here

Transcription Services

We also offer a transcription service, to provide time-coded scripts for translation. The length of many languages will expand when compared to original English and care must be taken in the translation to keep the true meaning of the English, while staying within the time frame allowed. We sometimes have to edit the English to make a more concise version of the original, this is because the written version of many languages is much longer than the English and would not fit in the allocated time-slot.
