We were asked to subtitle the this film from French into English by Sheffield University. The film was commissioned in 1942 by the Propaganda Abteilung, a delegation of Nazi Germany’s propaganda ministry within occupied France by the ex-Mason Mamy. It denounces Freemasonry, parliamentarianism and Jews as part of Vichy’s drive against them and seeks to prove a Jewish-Masonic plot.

Foreign Language Subtitles – Burnt on
One method of subtitling is called burned on subtitles, which means they cannot be turned on or off and are always visible. These are also called open captions and they are part of the video file itself. Using this method means that multiple languages cannot be shown using the same file, therefore it is necessary to produce multiple versions of the video with the different languages, these can be selected by the user, for example by clicking on different links on a web page.
Closed captions are the opposite of open captions and are found on DVD’s etc. These can be switched on and off through the selection menu created in the authoring process.
On-Screen Text Localisation into any Foreign Language
As well as producing the subtitles we can also localise any on-screen text into any foreign language. Depending on the complexity and how the original text was produced we may require the data package it was made in.
There are various ways of producing subtitles to display on your video. We can advise you on the best option for yourselves and even produce samples for you to choose from. We can also advise on the best fonts to use too.
